STEP 1: Register!

Register for the Project by Friday, March 27, 2020. You will receive a confirmation email, so please check your SPAM folder in case our email is not delivered in your inbox. Thank you.

STEP 2: Share the Book Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth
Read the book with your students and discuss some of the innovative ways you can help Planet Earth or its inhabitants.  What inspires your students?

The book is available in both print or in Kindle version.  Did you know that you can display Kindle books on your projection screen for every student to see?  Simply use the Kindle Cloud Reader.

STEP 3: Join Our Project Facebook Group
LEVEL 2 Classes Only Level 1 Classes Skip This Step
For classes wanting to find partner classrooms to Skype or Google Hangout, we've created a private Facebook Group just for this project.  In your project confirmation email, you will have a link to our group. Simply request to join the group from that link.

Here, project participants can share photos of the engineering process, ask questions, and even crowd source Makerspace ideas.

Joining the group is not required.  If you would like to find a Skype partner for the project in your own social media network, that's terrific, too!   Just be sure to use our #eXstremeSTEAM hashtag so we can follow your progress.

STEP 4: Ideate Earth Day Project Designs
Challenge your students to design a solution to an issue Planet Earth or its inhabitants face.  It can be practical, fanciful, magical, or even over the top.  See where their imaginations lead them.

Be sure to capture this phase through photos. We would love to see the learning process at work. Share photos on Twitter or Instagram using our #eXtremeSTEAM hashtag.

STEP 5: Build Empathy Through a Community Connection
The goals of eXtremeSTEAM are:

1) to challenge students through design thinking
2) to positively impact their communities

During this phase, students should identify something in their community affecting Planet Earth or its inhabitants (people, animals, insects, etc.). How can they make positive changes to improve lives? Will there be a special event where they can share their project?

Picture
STEP 6: Time to Prototype
Turn students' designs into 3D prototypes and test them out.

Don't forget to share protoype photos on social media with our #eXtremeSTEAM hashtag.  We can't wait to see students' creativity in action.

Picture
STEP 7: Construct the Earth Day Solution
Now that prototypes have been tested out, the final design is ready to construct. Using whatever materials work best for the winning design, students will build their Earth Day solution.

This might be a great opportunity to partner with other classes or organizations.

(For example, one high school CTE class could build the structure while an
elementary class paints. Cross curricular and cross grade collaboration is a wonderful bonus to #eXtremeSTEAM!)

STEP 8: Put Your Earth Day Project to Work
Hurray! You are ready to help Planet Earth or its inhabitants. Put your solution to work and make lives better, positively impacting your community and the planet.

This is a perfect time to also contact your local news outlets and share your students' service learning project idea.  Our students are incredibly creative people and they should share that news with the world.  We would love to see the media post, as well. Be sure to use #eXtremeSTEAM so we can celebrate with you.

Picture
STEP 9: Post a Short Video to our Project Flipgrid or Social Media
Record a short video of your Earth Day project at work on our Project Flipgrid.

We can't wait to celebrate your students' creativity and generosity!

DEADLINE for the video submission is Wednesday, April 29, 2020

STEP 10: Find a Partner Classroom with which to Share Your Earth Day Project
LEVEL 2 Classes Only Level 1 Classes Skip This Step

One of the best parts of our global project is the opportunity for participating classrooms to connect and share their stories. Using our Facebook Group or your own PLN in Twitter or Instagram, find a partner classroom for your students to Skype, Zoom or Google Hangout Call.

If you have trouble finding a partner, we are glad to help.

STEP 11: Schedule Your Live Call
LEVEL 2 Classes Only Level 1 Classes Skip This Step

It's time for your students to share their creation and learning process with another classroom or school. Both classes will share their eXtremeSTEAM stories and celebrate the learning this project has provided.

It's time to determine a time that works best for both classrooms to host the virtual call.  Remember the share the following with each other:
  • Emails and/or Twitter/Instagram Handles
  • Dates/Times that work great for you
  • Time Zones
  • Skype IDs or Google Hangout Emails (If using Zoom.us, only one needs to create the meeting and emails the meeting link to the partner.
If time zones are an issue, you can use Skype Video Messages or Flipgrid Messages

STEP 12: Connect!
It is now time to share your amazing Earth Day projects with your connected class! Be prepared to tell a little about the process involved and focus on the community impact that your students made when putting their designs to work.

This is a great time to take photos of the live calls. If you share via social media using the #eXtremeSTEAM hashtag, we'd love to see them, but be sure to follow your district's social media policy before posting photos of students.

STEP 13: Celebrate Your Collaborative Success with Partner Teacher/Class
You've put in the hard work and connected your communities. Give your new friends some social media love and send them a Cyber High-5.

And THANK YOU for joining in the 2020 eXtreme STEAM: Earth Day Edition Project!
